Squishy Swelling to Smooth Recovery: Pete’s Hygroma Case

Meet Pete — an adorable Great Pyrenees mix puppy who came to see us for a soft, squishy swelling on his right elbow. It didn’t seem to bother him at all (because… puppy), but his family noticed it had shown up a few days earlier and wanted to be safe rather than sorry. Good call, Pete’s humans. 👏Elbow Hygroma

After examining Pete, our team suspected something called an elbow hygroma. A hygroma is a fluid-filled swelling that can form over bony areas like elbows—especially in large-breed dogs or puppies who love to plop down on hard floors. Think of it like a tiny water balloon made by the body to protect the elbow from repeated pressure.

🔍 What We Did

PeteTo make sure it wasn’t something more serious (like an abscess or infection), we performed a fine needle aspirate (FNA)—a quick procedure where we draw out a small sample of the fluid with a needle. Pete was a champ, and the results were consistent with a hygroma rather than an infection. Great news!

We gently drained the fluid and placed a supportive wrap on Pete’s elbow to help prevent it from filling back up right away.

🛏️ The Treatment Plan

Pete went home with:

✔️ Anti-inflammatory medication to help with swelling

✔️ A short course of antibiotics as a precaution

✔️ Instructions to keep his elbow wrapped and clean

✔️ Most importantly… SOFT BEDDING (Pete-approved luxury lounging only!)

His family was also advised to use a special hygroma wrap or pad to protect the elbow while it heals.

🐾 Why This Matters

Hygromas often look scarier than they are, but if left untreated they can become infected or more uncomfortable. Early treatment, padding, and keeping pets off hard surfaces can make a big difference—and often avoids surgery altogether.

💙 How’s Pete Now?

Pete is expected to make a great recovery with conservative management and lots of cozy nap spots. We’ll be rechecking him in a couple of weeks to make sure that elbow is staying nice and calm.

Pro Tip for Pet Parents:

If you notice a soft swelling on your dog’s elbow, don’t ignore it—especially in large or growing dogs. Catching a hygroma early can mean simpler treatment and faster healing.

Way to go, Pete, for being brave and letting us help your elbow bubble! 🐶✨
